Hormones and Body Shape

Many of us store more body fat on our hips and thighs although others tend to have long lean arms and legs but store more body fat about our midriffs. This distribution of fat is related straight with two main hormones: lipoprotein lipase, or LPL, which encourages fat storage, and hormone-sensitive lipase, or HSL, which encourages fat to be distributed in the blood after which burnt off. The quantity of LPL and HSL may differ from individual to individual and from one part of the physique to another, straight affecting our shape.

  • More LPL in the belly and much less HSL in the lower hip region creates an apple-like shape, with more physique fat distributed about the belly.
  • More LPL in the hips and backs of the arms and much less HSL in the upper physique creates a pear-like shape.

This hormone distribution assists to explain why we still retain the exact same overall physique shape when we lose weight.
